2016 Grantees

The Musical Fund Society granted $51,400 to 14 organizations for projects in the 2015–16 season.

 

Astral ArtistsIn support of its “Concerts for Kids” program consisting of two concerts of interactive musical fun for the entire family where children will experience the joy of interacting with artists while also making memorable early contact with the world of classical music.$3,400
Black Pearl Chamber OrchestraIn support of its Citywide Side by Side Concert staged at the Robin Hood Dell in East Fairmont Park, a project to expand the quality and variety of programming options thereby exposing area residents to different art forms and attracting a more diverse cross-section of Philadelphians to that venue.$3,300
Bowerbird Support for its 2015-2016 GATE series focused on increasing the presence of Philadelphia based composers and performing ensembles. This ongoing series of concerts takes place at The Rotunda, a community-gathering place located in Philadelphia’s diverse West Philadelphia neighborhood.$3,900
Chamber Orchestra of PhiladelphiaIn support of the creation of a new work from pianist/composer Conrad Tao encompassing piano, orchestra, technology and experimental media.$3,700
Community Music School of CollegevilleIn support of expanding its offering of educational programs focusing on the studying of modern classical music.$2,500
The CrossingFinancial support for the commissioning of “Seven Responses” a series of companion pieces by a selection of international composers to Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri. The new work will be performed in repertory with the original in June of 2016 at the Philadelphia Cathedral.$3,000
The Curtis InstituteIn support of its composer in residence program for 2015-2016. A program that provides students the opportunity to learn new techniques from renowned composers from around the globe.$4,300
Dolce Suono EnsembleIn support of “Spotlight on American Women Composers” an expanded concert and symposium that will explore the contributions of three pivotal American women composers.$4,500
Lyric FestIn support of “Letters” a program of mostly American song, prose settings of letters and the stories that surround them.$3,900
Network for New MusicIn support of “All the Things He Was: Music of Milton Babbitt and His Students” A spring 2016 project that will consist of a concert program, a symposium featuring a Babbitt documentary, and an educational project involving student composers.$4,600
Piffaro, The Renaissance BandIn support of a program building on the concept of the “Harmony of the Spheres“  which purports that music, because of its ratios, intervals and modes, was essential to the cosmic system.$4,400
Tempeste di MareIn support of “Dresden Vespers of 1619” a project featuring rarely performed music depicting the remarkable musical meeting of Germany’s great composers Praetorius, Schütz and Schedit at the Christmas Court of George I$4,400
Temple University Music Preparatory DivisionIn support of a residency  by the Jasper String Quartet for a Beethoven project with students of Temple Music Pep.$4,500
