Member Spotlight: Ian Sadock
About Ian: Ian Sadock (he/him) is an award-winning pianist, music theorist, and educator from Philadelphia with unique research interests in the cognition and perception of extemporaneously composed music, cross-cultural theories of harmony, and musicolinguistic models of learning. Ian maintains an active studio of piano and music theory students. “Sadock’s composition and performance was intense and intricate, with the communication between the [trio] clear and intimate.” – UArts Radio “Sadock himself extemporizes with pensive cascades of notes” “…introspective, shimmering…” – Jazz Times Additionally, Ian is committed to public service, currently serving on the Board of Directors at Jazz Bridge, a Philadelphia-based non-profit organization aiding musicians in crisis. His volunteer work has also included grant adjudication for Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance as well as in the field of emergency medicine, serving as an Advanced EMT in West Chester, PA. He is now also investing his time in labor activism for the arts and higher education communities, having recently been appointed to a leadership role on the Labor Committee in Philadelphia’s DSA chapter. Ian has been described as “a teacher’s teacher”; his pupils are largely professional music educators, touring musicians, elected officials, as well as our next generation of future leaders. Ian is also pursuing a PhD in Music Theory and holds a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from University of the Arts, as well as two Bachelor’s degrees (Piano Performance, Cell & Molecular Biology) from West Chester University.
